I had originally identified this bird as a Downy Woodpecker but after an enlightening conversation with my wise cousin and a quick reference check with the Cornell Lab of Ornithology, I've come to the conclusion that it is a Hairy, not Downy Woodpecker.

First bird photo of the new year
A female Hairy Woodpecker on a neighbour's tree. I've seen one in the neighbourhood once before but this is my first photo of one. What a nice way to start a new year.
