Renovation day at the Osprey nest

The chicks will be fledging any day now and Mom is adding new branches to the nest, with any luck, she's getting ready for next year.

  1. It's so exciting to catch them in action.

  2. A mother's work is never done. I am so excited that this very skilled parent has raised her chicks successfully this year - long may she continue.

  3. We saw an osprey nest along the road, but I can't remember now if it was in Labrador or Newfoundland. We passed it twice. It was on one of those special platforms on a power pole so they wouldn't build a nest where the wires connect. Wayne and I had a wonderful trip. One week wasn't enough time, but there is always another chance to take a trip. - Margy

    1. Once the chicks and adults have left the area for the year I'll be checking with the area utility company, Hydro One, to ask if they have plans to relocate the birds. As the current nest is on a utility pole, there could be risk to the birds or to the power supply in the area. Here in Canada utility companies have been known to put up decoy pole - topped by a wooden platform, suitable for nest building - near the original site. They would then remove the original nest in hopes the returning birds would choose the pole with the platform and build a new nest.

  6. Beautiful! We see ospreys here as well, and there is a very large nest perched on top of an out-of-use siren post. You have to know it's there - a wonderful secret to share with those gorgeous birds.

  7. Great osprey pictures. I didn't see any of our lake osprey residents this year. Just didn't make it around to their nest areas. We had a wonderful trip to Newfoundland and Labrador this summer. Even better than the last one, especially since we flew direct and spent the whole time there. I'm ready to do it all over again, but Haida Gwaii comes next. - Margy
