Mourning Dove update - sad news

Sadly, the single chick that hatched on July 27th, died sometime overnight last night. I'm not sure if it was weak from the start or if there was only one parent tending the nest and therefore it wasn't receiving enough nutrition. Over the past 4 summers we've often seen eggs abandoned but this is the first time we've seen a chick die in the nest. It's now buried in our garden.

I have to wonder if this is the last nesting for this season or maybe even the last time they'll nest here. Will keep you posted.

  1. Poor little baby. At least you gave it a decent burial.

  2. Oh - Im so sad about this~~

I just finished watching a great Masterpiece classic series - The Cazulets - you must get this - I think I have loved it as much as anything - almost as good as Downton Abby!

Hope you are having a great weekend - I am burning the midnight oil working on my latest project. (its on my blog now~~)

Bet you are curled up with your kitty~~

  3. I'm so sorry. That is terrible news. I know how wonderful it is to watch birds nesting and feel like they are part of the family for the short time they share with us. I hope they do return. - Margy

  4. Sad news. I have not been able to follow the doves this year as I used to, but I think of them often. Poor little thing.
