Juvenile Male Cardinal

When I was getting tomorrow's lunch ready this little fellow showed up at the feeders. Juvenile male Cardinals are not a bit dignified looking. In fact they look a bit like something the cat might have coughed up. His wonky looking plumage will eventually turn regal red.

  1. Two in a row, must have been a nest nearby. Lucky you. All I got was a nest of yellow jackets on my balcony porch. Not quite the same thing. At least the condo association sent out an exterminator within hours of their discovery. - Margy

  2. He's just as cute as a button...and they are not nearly as skittish as the adults.

  3. I have never seen a juvenile before so I'm glad you shared this, Elaine. I will keep an eye out - we have a pair of cardinals in our yard daily, so maybe there are young too.

  4. Great shots! I actually didn't know until just a few years ago that baby cardinals are born brown--That Mother Nature always comes up with the best protection for animals, doesn't she?
