Morning in the woods and a bruised ego

The last time I took a look at the trail was on February 19th - we'd had a mild spell and some rain so I found high water which was quickly turning to ice.  This was the view of the creek that day.

This flooded area had already turned to ice.

Fast forward to this morning. The creek and river had long ago subsided to normal winter levels.

The tree in the center of this photo is sporting a two layer ice "skirt" which shows how high the water had been.

I think this tree looks like it's doing a wild party dance.

I found an ice chandelier.

My elusive friend, the Belted Kingfisher, was more cooperative than usual today and posed nicely for me. Still not close enough for sharp photo though.

It was a lovely morning.

However, just after I took this shot of a passing freight train, my right foot found a patch of the ice left behind after the creek subsided and down I went.

First on my right hand and knee and then flat on my face. Not pretty but also not injured. Well, nothing broken at least. Bruised ego, bruised knee and sore hand and shoulder. I never walk in the woods without my trekking pole and my cell phone. I didn't need to use my phone but I did utilize my trekking pole to get back to my feet safely. All while muttering to myself "I'm fine, I'm fine, I'm fine". And I was.

  1. And, if you are anything like me, your first thought was for the camera. I'm glad you are okay...and bonus points for being prepared.

  2. Fortunately, my camera is small and I had tucked it inside my coat to keep it warm - it helps to conserve the batteries in the cold - so it wasn't at risk. I have a Canon SX100 which only comes with a wrist strap but today I had also hooked it onto a lanyard ($1.00) in order to wear it around my neck and put it inside my coat.

  4. I'm so glad you are okay!! I've done the exact same thing--We certainly don't fall like we did when we were eight years old, do we?

  5. Love your ice chandelier. I think I must be lacking in imagination or perhaps over imaginative, your dancing tree looks to be standing on it's head and spinning its limbs in the air.
Glad you weren't injured seriously in your fall.

I wear both my car keys and camera on a lanyard and this morning, after having my keys around my neck for hours, swapped them for my camera, and much later walked to the car thinking my keys were around my neck. I was glad no-one saw my startled look when I took the camera off from around my neck to open the car door.

  6. Poor Baby! I've fallen many times this winter but have not yet done the face plant. I love the picture of the dancing tree and the kingfisher. I wonder was he ticked off to have his snap taken?

  7. What a lovely walk in the winter woods. We never did get a good snow this year, and I envy you. (for a little while - it would drive me nuts for it to be that cold for more than a week) Yes, it is a wild tree dance!

  8. I loves me a good kingfisher, but I surely appreciate how uncooperative they can be. I think you got yourself a fine shot there. And I'm pretty jealous of your pretty weather. On the other hand, I'm still vertical.

  9. Those are gorgeous pictures! I wish we had snow here but the last time it snowed where I live was 1959! Beautiful photos!
