Friday My Town Shoot Out - a few of my favorite things

I approached this topic (chosen by the Shoot Out Team) by thinking about favorite things I like to photograph. Are there things that I photograph often? You betcha!

For example, I photograph this barn pretty much everytime I drive past it. A spring shot-

And a winter shot -

I also have a bit of a fixation with these bee hives; resting for the winter in this photo -

And then there are other things I photograph that I understand why they are favorites. The dark green rectangle on this barn used to be covered by a sign which read something like "C. Riddell and Daughters". You don't see signs that read "and daughters" too often.

The Mourning Doves that nest above our front door are favorites of everyone in the house -

including Gray, watching from his favorite perch

And finally my last item is probably my favorite Christmas decoration. It is a Hallmark ornament from their 1982 collection and it reminds me of my brother who wore a robin egg blue velvet shorts overall on his first birthday in 1958. My brother, like the angel, has red hair. It touches my heart every year when I hang it on the tree.

  1. Tour header makes me glad I'm in Florida. Our white Christmas is the white sand on the beach.
The turtle dove and cat are probably best buds by now.
    Thanks for posting.

  5. Wonderful post, Elaine. I too would have an entire album of photos of that barn, in all seasons and weathers. Gray is such a handsome devil, too!

How did you do the snow effect?

  7. the new header photo with the snow (3 demension!) falling is really mood setting. I don't know which mood I should let be primary - homesickness because right now i have fog and rain and hot... or joy at the memories this blog evoked....
    wonderful.

  8. Elaine the barns are so beautiful, peaceful and reminders of supporting our local economies. You are so talented at capturing animal expressions. What a lovely cat portrait in the softly falling snow.

Enjoy the coming season, Barry and Linda

  10. I love the winter shot of the barn - so pretty. Your cat cracks me up! If there were birds that close to our windows, my dumb cat would end up flinging himself into the windows all day (much like he does now when the rabbits get too close) :)

  19. Hi Elaine - I enjoyed the contrast in all your photos - the barn at different seasons, the dove is just awesome and, being a cat lover, just adore Gray - my two have sniffed around the Christmas decorations decided they weren't that interesting and have gone back to sleep!!! take care, Judyx

  20. Thanks for the kind words everyone. Gray still looks up at the "dove window" at least a couple of times a day and we tell him "they won't be back until March, if at all" but his hope springs eternal. They've nested on the ledge between our front door and a transom window directly above the door the past two years. This past summer they raised 4 broods of 2 chicks for a total of 8 little ones from March to late September. They also had two failed nests. As for Gray, he's a darling cat who acts and thinks like a dog most of the time and he's a VERY handsome boy. Have a great week everyone!

  21. I like to spring and winter comparison shots with the barn. They both look like great seasons to visit. We are still waiting for our first snow, but once it's here we'll probably wish it went away. So fickle are we out here on the coast. - Margy

  22. Love the barn. I would really like to have a spot that merited being photographed through the seasons but can't think of one in our urban environment.
