ABC Wednesday - "N" is for nieces

THE best word in the N section of the dictionary is "niece" :

Middle English nece granddaughter, niece, from Anglo-French nece, niece, from Late Latin neptia, from Latin neptis; akin to Latin nepot-, nepos grandson, nephew
Date: 14th century
1 : a daughter of one's brother, sister, brother-in-law, or sister-in-law

In this case, they are the daughters of my brother Rob. My neices Sarah (l) and Amanda (r) are coming to visit us this Friday (I'm the thorn between the two roses in this photo) from Newfoundland. We are going to take in a performance of West Side Story at the Stratford Festival and generally just hang out and have fun together for a few days. They're 20 and 23 respectively now but it seems like only yesterday that they were wee little girls.

  8. Speaking of Anglo-French, i've been fascinated by the fact that the pronunciation of the French city Nice is niece.

Anyway, I have only nieces, no nephews. On my side, they are 30 and 18. On my wife's side, they're 8, 8 (twins) and 7. I have a daughter, so no boys on either side.
