Under the lights

About once a month we stop by Mel's Fish and Chips for supper. This was the view from our table out through the front window tonight. I like how the fluorescent tubes appear to be suspended in mid-air outdoors. There's also a puzzle I'd like to solve about a mural sized painting on the west wall of Mel's. Legend has it that the man who did it was passing through town and painted the picture to earn some money to continue his travels.
He may well have been from the east coast, possibly even Newfoundland, as the signature reads: "Eric R. Dwyer 1952". Dwyer is a surname I'm familiar with. I even know of an Eric Dwyer who was a neighbour of my friend Alison, but I've checked and it wasn't that Eric Dwyer. If anyone can shed any light, please let me know by clicking on the word Comments at the bottom of this entry and leaving a note. Thanks for your help, I'd love to solve the mystery.

  1. I love the mom and pop fish and chip places. We have one in our town that I go to once a month.

I agree that the light looks very cool in the photo. Good luck getting the information on that painting. It is indeed lovely.

  3. I really like your photos.

    Mysteries always intrigue me.

There is an Eric Dwyer, sportscaster and public affairs reporter for CBC, who is also an artist...

Whether he is old enough to be the same Eric Dwyer, I don't know (his father was killed in WWII, so he very well could be old enough to be the painter). You could try contacting him and finding out.

  5. My grandfather painted this mural. He eventually came to the United States and opened a sign shop and when he retired became a Commercial Artist. Thanks for sharing I would love to see the mural in person if its still there.

  6. Bridget, I'm crossing my fingers that you'll pop back to this post again. Please drop me an email if you do: elaine489@gmail.com

I'd love to hear from you.

I believe at least one other mural in Mel's was done by your grandfather.
